Controversial tourism signs still standing despite agreement
People write to me almost every day asking why are the state tourism highway signs still standing?
You'll recall the feds and the state came to a last minute agreement at the end of September that would allow New York to keep $14 million in federal highway funds in return for taking down most of the illegal signs.
That was one month ago, and now 30 days later, the signs haven’t budged. State DOT officials say they are still finalizing plans for the taking down the signs.
Many of the signs can be found along the Thruway. Officials there confirm that no signs have been removed yet. They say they are still trying to lock down a schedule for sign removal.
It's a safe bet that the state never had any intention of taking them down before Election Day. CBS 6 will stay on the state, and keep you posted.
