Beyond the Games: Nick Delpopolo

Judo player Nick Delpopolo failed a drug test at the Olympics four years ago, was stripped of his 7th place finish, and sent home from the London games.

And as if that wasn't bad enough, his story was told by TMZ, and just about every other media outlet in the country.

Delpopolo inadvertently ate a pot-laced baked good before the Olympics started, and for that, his world was crumbling.

But now he's on the road to redemption.

Delpopolo, who grew up in New Jersey, but graduated from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, recently wrote a thank you letter to the friends and coaches who helped him through those dark days, and the dark months that followed.

At the end of the letter he typed, #rioredemption, and that's been his singular focus.

The top ranked American judoka in the country lives in Florida now, but right now, he's back in the Capital Region, training with mentor Jason Morris.
